Cisco Nexus

Cisco Nexus license series products, thanks to their many advantages, are very popular in data integration, data storage and network services in small and large data centers. With Cisco Fabric Interconnect, in addition to being able to provide the best service, they can provide a programmable platform that fully supports virtual environments of their corporate and enterprise users.

The Cisco Nexus product line includes a number of different Nexus models, each of which requires ordering and licensing for best performance. In this way, this equipment can meet the needs of any data center. In the following, to get more acquainted with the products of this brand, we will briefly introduce these products.

Cisco Nexus

The communication of links in Unified networks (provides a common platform) is through the FCoE protocol, which enables LAN and SAN network communication in a common platform. The equipment used in these networks have very high processing power and capacity (Back Plane) compared to traditional equipment. These features are available in the licensed Cisco Nexus Cisco switches.

Another advantage of the licensed Cisco Nexus switches is the use of FEX or Fabric Extender. A Remote Line Card is one of the Nexus switches that provides the possibility of applying policies, configurations and other features of the switch remotely. These devices provide network manageability, integrity and simplicity.

Another feature of these switches is capability of having a large number of communication links with a speed of at least 10G.

Other advantages of Nexus switches compared to traditional switches are mentioned below.

    • OTV: This feature provides layer two communication between different data centers.
    • Fabric Path: Layer 3 routing features such as Load Sharing, Equal Path can be transferred to Layer 2 with this feature.
    • LISP: With this feature, a second address will be assigned to each node, and by changing the IP range between different data center sites, the policies of the previous site will be applied to the node in the new site.
    • VPC (Virtual Port Channel): With this feature, 2 switches are known as one switch in the network from the point of view of layer 2 protocols. So that the STP protocol no longer blocks a link between switches. Also, the physical disconnection of the link or the down of the switches does not cause any interruption in the network.

Cisco Nexus 5000 Series Switches

This series of Cisco products is suitable for the End of Row data center access layer. This is because the architecture of Cisco Nexus 5000 Series switches and their licenses supports virtualization and Unified Fabric environments. The Cisco Nexus 5000 Series (N5k) switches feature full support for Layer 2 and 3 features and VXLAN support for data center network expansion.

These switches fully support Fiber Channel, Ethernet and FCoE interfaces. Be aware that the default operating system on the device can easily run most of the features of the Nexus 5000 platform. Features that you will have with these switches include features such as layer 2 management and security, Cisco license features including IP multicast, layer 3 routing and enhanced Layer 2 features such as the Cisco FabricPath.

Cisco Nexus 5000 Series switches are available on two platforms in global markets: 10 Gbps switches and 40 Gbps switches. The 5600 Series 56G Series is capable of delivering 2.56Tbps switching capacity, while the 40Gbps 5600 Series Series can deliver an impressive 7.68Tbps.

All models except the Nexus 5696Q (40Gbps) take up one or two units of rack space, while the Nexus 5696Q is larger and requires 4 units of rack space alone.

Cisco Nexus 3000 Series Switches

This series of Cisco Nexus License switches can provide you with great features. These facilities include the following:

  • Multicast switching
  • line-rate in layer 2 and 3 unicasts
  • latency less than one microsecond
  • Support for 40 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces

The Nexus 3000 series switches are used in environments that need data with very little latency, or so-called latency-sensitivity. Like HFT 6, car crash test simulation programs and high-performance computing.

Cisco Nexus 3000 switches are currently available in more than 15 different models, each with its own Cisco Nexus licenses. In this way, these switches can meet all the needs of an organization.

The variety of Nexus 3000 series switches starts with switches with 1GE ports and expands to 32 100GE ports on the Nexus 3232C cisco switch license. To use the switch in latency-sensitive environments, as mentioned earlier, this type of switch must be used. Because the Cisco Nexus 3000 switches are designed to eliminate any switching delays while providing plenty of buffer space for each port. Some models in this series even have the ability to monitor their latency.

Cisco Nexus 7000 Series Switches

With these Cisco switches, end-to-end data center architecture can be presented on a single platform. Using this type of architectural structure, core, aggregation and access layers can be monitored. One of the advantages of Cisco N7k series switches (Nexus 7000) is the high density of ports with 10, 40, 100 Gigabit Ethernet bandwidth.

The main features of the Nexus 7000 series switches include support for FEX, vPC, VDC, MPLS and Fabric path. In addition, the N7K supports powerful and stable technologies for delivering DCI 5 such as OTV and LISP. Unlike the N7K, the N9K does not support these technologies for better stability. Instead, it supports newer DCI, VXLAN, BGP, and EVPN technologies that can be used to implement DCI site-to-site implementation.

The Nexus 7000 switches include two series of Cisco switches called the 7000 and 7700. It should be noted that the 7700 series, the newer version is 7000

Advantages of using Nexus 7700 compared to Nexus 7000 series:

  • On the Nexus 7700, more bandwidth can be utilized for each slot. (1.3Tbps compared to 550Gbps)
  • Better performance and support for 192 ports (100GE) 18 slots compared to 96 ports (100GE 18 slots)
  • The Nexus 7000 comes in 4, 9, 10 and 18 slot models, while the 7700 Series comes in 2, 6, 10 and 18 slot models.

Cisco Nexus 9000 Series Switches

This series of Cisco switches are used in data centers. These switches are capable of operating in Cisco NX-OS Software or ACI 1 modes. The main features of the new Cisco Nexus 9000 series include support for vPC 3, FEX 2 and VXLAN platforms. There are some key differences between the Nexus 9000 and Nexus 7000 series switches.

Unlike the Nexus 7000 series, the Nexus 9000 series switches do not support ACI. On the other hand, Nexus 9000 switches do not support data storage protocols, while Nexus 7000 switches support these protocols. Also, Nexus 9000 switches like the Nexus 7000 series do not support VDC technology. Finally, the Nexus 9000 series is expected to complement the Nexus 7000 series to transform data centers toward ACI.

Cisco Nexus 9000 switches are available in a variety of models and configurations for use by organizations and companies in the market:

  • Nexus 9200 series (1 RU) Cloud Scale standalone
  • Nexus 9300 series (1 RU)
  • Nexus 9300-EX (1 RU) Cloud Scale standalone / ACI
  • Nexus 9500-EX (1 RU) Cloud Scale Modules
  • Nexus 9500 Cloud Scale switches (4, 8, 16 slots)
  • Nexus 9800 Switches
