Product Architecture

The Cisco Nexus 1000V Series Switch has two major components (Figure 1): the virtual Ethernet module (VEM), which runs inside the hypervisor, and the virtual supervisor module (VSM), which manages the VEMs.

Virtual Supervisor Module

The Cisco Nexus 1000V Series VSM controls multiple VEMs as one logical modular distributed virtual switch. Configuration is performed through the VSM and is automatically propagated to the VEMs.

The VSM is also integrated with Cloud management and orchestration tools such that the virtualization administrator can take advantage of the network configuration in the Cisco Nexus 1000V Series switch.

Cisco Nexus 3100-V Platform Switches

Product Overview

The Cisco Nexus 3100-V switch platform is the latest addition to the industry’s widely deployed Cisco Nexus 3100 platform. The Cisco Nexus 3100-V platform consists of high-density, low-power-consumption, and low-latency fixed-configuration data center switches with line-rate Layer 2 and 3 features that support enterprise applications, service provider hosting, High-Performance Computing (HPC), and cloud computing environments. These switches support a wide range of port speeds with flexible combinations of 1/10/40/100-Gbps connectivity with improved port density and scalability in compact 1-Rack-Unit (1RU) form factors.

The Cisco Nexus 3100-V platform runs the industry-leading Cisco® NX-OS Software operating system, which helps ensure continuous availability and sets the standard for mission-critical data center environments. The platform is designed for programmable fabric, which offers flexibility, mobility, and scalability for service providers and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and cloud providers; and for programmable networks, which automate configuration and management for customers who want to take advantage of the DevOps operating model and tool sets. It is well suited for data centers that require cost-effective, power-efficient, line-rate Layer 2 and 3 Top-of-Rack (ToR) switches. These switches also support forward and reverse airflow (port-side exhaust and port-side intake) schemes with AC and DC power inputs.

Designed for third-party blade servers

The 4000 Series switches extend the benefits of the Cisco Nexus Family to blade servers. The series addresses the challenges of having more switches and cables in a single chassis, implementing virtual machine mobility, and meeting high bandwidth and power requirements. These Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) switches are fully compliant with the IEEE Data Center Bridging specification.

Product Overview

In today’s data centers, virtualization deployments have become commonplace, and this trend is increasing rapidly with the availability of 10 Gigabit Ethernet servers at attractive prices. The combination of increased adoption of these servers and applications with higher bandwidth requirements is increasing the need for dense 10 and 40 Gigabit Ethernet switching. Moreover, data center architectures are changing as application environments create new demands for IT infrastructure. Application workloads are deployed across a mix of virtualized and nonvirtualized server and storage infrastructure, requiring a network infrastructure that provides consistent connectivity, security, and visibility across a range of bare-metal, virtualized, and cloud computing environments.

Cisco Nexus 5000 Series Switches

The Cisco Nexus 5600 platform is the third generation of the Cisco Nexus 5000 Series Switches: the industry’s leading data center server access switches. The Cisco Nexus 5600 platform switches can be categorized into
10-Gbps and 40-Gbps switches. This data sheet focuses on the 10-Gbps switches only. Cisco Nexus 5600 platform 10-Gbps switches are the successors to the industry’s widely adopted Cisco Nexus 5500 platform switches. The switches maintain all the existing Cisco Nexus 5500 platform features, including LAN and SAN convergence (unified ports and Fibre Channel over Ethernet [FCoE]), fabric extenders, and Cisco FabricPath. In addition, the Cisco Nexus 5600 platform 10-Gbps switches bring integrated line-rate Layer 2 and 3 capabilities with true 40 Gigabit Ethernet support (on uplink and network-facing ports), Cisco programmable fabric innovations, Network Virtualization Using Generic Routing Encapsulation (NVGRE), Virtual Extensible LAN (VXLAN) bridging and routing, network programmability and visibility, large buffer capacity, and significantly greater scalability and performance for highly virtualized, automated, and cloud environments.

The Cisco Nexus 5600 platform 10-Gbps switches include both 1-Rack-Unit (1RU) and 2RU switches built to meet the challenges of today’s data centers with a flexible, agile, and energy-efficient design. These 10-Gbps switches are an important component of the Cisco Unified Data Center architecture, complementing existing Cisco Nexus switches. These energy-efficient switches offer 10 and 40 Gigabit Ethernet and FCoE, providing integrated Layer 2 and 3 features at wire speed and low latency of approximately 1 microsecond for any packet size. With a choice of port-side intake and fan-side intake airflow options to align with cold-aisle and hot-aisle placement in the data center, the 10-Gbps switches are designed for a broad range of traditional data center and large-scale virtualized cloud deployments.

The 10-Gbps switches together with the Cisco NX-OS Software operating system provides customers with features and capabilities that are widely deployed in data centers around the world. NX-OS is a purpose-built data center operating system designed for performance, resiliency, scalability, manageability, and programmability. It meets Ethernet and storage networking requirements, providing a robust and comprehensive feature set that can meet the demanding requirements of virtualization and automation in present and future data centers.

The Cisco Nexus 5600 platform 10-Gbps switches are designed for Top-of-Rack (ToR) and Middle-of-Row (MoR) deployment in data centers that support enterprise applications, service provider hosting, and cloud computing environments.

Cisco Nexus 5672UP Switch

The Cisco Nexus 5672UP Switch (Figure 1) is a 10 and 40 Gigabit Ethernet (40-Gbps on uplink and network-facing ports) switch offering wire-speed performance for up to seventy-two 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports (using Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable [QSFP] breakout cables). The Cisco Nexus 5672UP Switches are Layer 2 and 3 nonblocking 10 and 40 Gigabit Ethernet and FCoE-capable switches with up to 1.44 Terabits per second (Tbps) of internal bandwidth. The Cisco Nexus 5672UP offers 48 fixed 1 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports, of which the last 16 ports (highlighted in orange on the chassis for easy identification) are unified ports. All 48 fixed ports support classical Ethernet and FCoE. In addition, the 16 unified ports provide 8-, 4-, and 2-Gbps Fibre Channel, as well as 10 Gigabit Ethernet and FCoE connectivity options. The Cisco Nexus 5672UP also offers 6 ports of 40 Gbps using QSFP transceivers for Ethernet and FCoE support. The Cisco Nexus 5672UP has three fan modules and two power supplies. The Cisco Nexus 5672UP supports VXLAN in bridging and routing modes on all ports at line rate, enabling the migration of virtual machines between servers across Layer 3 networks. The switch also offers up to 15 buffer-to-buffer credits per port, helping provide SAN extension of up to 3.7 kilometers at 8-Gbps Fibre Channel speed assuming full Fibre Channel frame size of 2112 bytes.

Cisco Nexus 6000 Series Switches are designed to deliver high-density 40 Gigabit Ethernet in an energy-efficient, compact form factor. They offer a comprehensive integrated Layer 2 and Layer 3 feature set. That makes them ideal for space-constrained, high-density, and high-performance deployments in traditional, virtualized, and cloud environments.

The Cisco Nexus 7000 Series is based on the proven Cisco NX-OS Software operating system, with enhanced features to deliver real-time system upgrades with exceptional manageability and serviceability.

The first in the next generation of switch platforms, the Cisco Nexus 7000 Series (Figure) provides integrated resilience combined with features optimized specifically for the data center for availability, reliability, scalability, and ease of management.

Coupled with Cisco NX-OS, the Cisco Nexus 7000 Series delivers a comprehensive set of features with nonstop operation in four chassis form factors:

All Cisco Nexus 7000 Series chassis use a passive mid-plane architecture, providing physical connectors and copper traces for interconnecting the fabric modules and the I/O modules for direct data transfer. All intermodule switching is performed via the crossbar fabric ASICs on the individual I/O modules and fabric modules. In the case of Cisco Nexus 7004 chassis, since there are no fabric modules, the mid-plane provides the connectors and traces to interconnect the fabric ASICs on the I/O modules directly.

A scalable, fully distributed fabric architecture composed of up to five fabric modules combined with the chassis midplane delivers up to 550 Gbps per slot for 8.8 Tbps, 9.9 Tbps, and 18.7 Tbps of forwarding capacity in the 9-slot, 10-slot, and 18-slot switches, respectively. The 4-slot chassis delivers up to 1.92 Tbps of forwarding capacity in combination with the built-in fabric system.

The midplane design on the 9-slot, 10-slot, and 18-slot chassis and the backplane design on the 4-slot chassis support flexible technology upgrades as your needs change, providing ongoing investment protection.

Cisco Nexus 7000 4-Slot Switch Chassis

The Cisco Nexus 7000 4-Slot chassis with two I/O module slots supports up to 96 x 1 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports, 12 x 40 Gigabit Ethernet ports and 4 x 100 Gigabit Ethernet ports, meeting the needs of small to medium-size data centers, co-locations, access- and aggregation-layer deployments, high-speed core deployments, and smaller operation zones. The Cisco Nexus 7000 4-Slot chassis also has two dedicated supervisor slots to provide full redundancy and high availability. The 4-slot chassis does not require fabric modules. The local I/O module fabrics are connected back to back to form a two-stage crossbar that interconnects the I/O modules and the supervisor engines. The backplane capacity is determined by the installed I/O modules.

Energy-Efficient Design

The Cisco Nexus 7000 Series uses power supplies that are up to 90 percent efficient, so less power is wasted as heat, and more power is available for the system to use than with typical power supplies.

The fan modules in the chassis adjust to compensate for changing thermal characteristics. At lower speeds, they use less power. In the 9-slot chassis, the fan tray is designed to completely turn off the power for a row of fans when the corresponding slots are unused.

Consolidation of multiple switches in the Cisco Nexus 7000 Series is enabled by the powerful combination of high density and performance, support for device virtualization, and comprehensive reliability and availability features. This consolidation increases the power efficiency by reducing wasted power from multiple partially loaded and inflexible systems.
