F5 BIG-IP Standard Series 2000 License

F5 BIG-IP equipment is available in V and I series. The i2000 series of BIG-IP products have been introduced for use in organizations and small to medium enterprises. The i2000 series is designed and produced in two models, i2600 and i2800, which organizations can choose from one of these licensed products in the BIG-IP series of F5 Company, depending on their needs.

The entry-level BIG-IP i2000 series is a high-performance ADC platform for small to medium enterprises and organizations that require integrated application delivery and security. Supporting the GBB F5 package license, the i2800 offers twice the power of Layer 4, 2.8 times the demand of Layer 4 and 1.5 times the demand of Layer 7 compared to previous models.

Control in Private Clouds

Organizations are moving to private clouds to achieve agility and accelerate application time to market while maintaining control. Regardless of the cloud stack chosen, only basic network and application services such as load balancing are typically provided. Advanced security and application delivery services are required to optimize and protect applications. Highly scalable BIG-IP platforms with programmatic interfaces and service delivery templates enable integration and automation with orchestration systems, providing right-sized services targeted to specific application needs.

F5 solutions integrate with leading private cloud technology stacks including OpenStack, VMware and Microsoft. For OpenStack, F5 provides native orchestration with Heat templates to automate end-to-end deployment of advanced applications and security services, reducing deployment times from days to minutes. The integration with VMware vRealize Orchestrator via the Blue Medora vRO plugin reduces setup time, enables self-service of F5 application services by application owners, and automates complex, multi-step workflows. F5 iWorkflow enables the integration of F5 appliances with SDN (Software-Defined Networking) orchestration systems that provide a single point of contact between the orchestrator and the F5 appliances.

Two-Tier Architecture

For organizations implementing a private cloud, a two-tier architecture offers an optimized design that takes full advantage of hardware and software application delivery services. The first tier provides services such as L4 traffic management, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) firewall or SSL offloading that are centralized and shared for all north-south traffic entering the network, thereby consistently enforcing application policies.

These services, which handle high traffic volumes and incur high CPU loads, require high performance, scalability, and guaranteed Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Dedicated, purpose-built hardware such as BIG-IP iSeries appliances meet these needs and can be less expensive than entry-level servers depending on the environment and application needs.

The tenant or application layer, includes emerging cloud-native applications that can be containerized or disaggregated into micro services. Applications require specific services that address the traffic within the application (east-west traffic). These services, which may include basic web application firewall load balancing or web performance optimizations, can be provided on an application basis through flexible, highly scalable software such as virtual editions of BIG-IP products.

Standardized for all F5 application services, this two-tier architecture model provides flexibility, a strategic point of control where best application policies can be applied, and complete visibility into all traffic, putting hardware where it’s needed and software agility near the application.

Consistent application security in public cloud

As more enterprise applications migrate to the public cloud, it becomes more difficult to maintain consistent application policies and network requirements. Additionally, many IT architects are unaware of the number of public cloud applications being deployed, the current configurations and services for those applications, and the detection of applications in flight. Enterprises are turning to interconnection services from colocation providers for direct access to the public cloud.

However, the application delivery and security services provided by public cloud providers are different and diverse compared to on-premises and private cloud solutions. F5 Application Connector is an add-on to the F5 BIG-IP platform that allows service insertion for public cloud applications. It also acts as a cloud proxy instance to securely connect public clouds within cloud interconnects (co-locations) or data centers to an enterprise’s application service infrastructure.

This enables the use of public cloud resources as part of an organization’s computing infrastructure. The application connector also performs workload discovery within Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the Azure public cloud and provides a secure connection to connection services or data centers, enabling the insertion of application services into the BIG-IP platform.
