Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series is a stackable enterprise access-switch family built for campus, branch, wired access, PoE endpoints, and converged wired-wireless networks. The range includes 24- and 48-port models, PoE+ and selected UPOE or multigigabit options, several uplink configurations, and optional StackWise-160 stacking.
Today, Cisco Catalyst 3650 is mainly relevant to organizations maintaining an installed network. A typical request may involve finding the correct legacy switch, upgrading an RTU license, replacing a failed unit, matching a power supply or stacking accessory, or planning a move to a newer Catalyst platform.

Who needs it: Organizations maintaining Catalyst 3650 environments that need an exact SKU, license upgrade, spare switch, accessory, or migration option.
Series Overview
Catalyst 3650 was designed to combine enterprise access switching with wired and wireless capabilities. Models cover standard Gigabit Ethernet and selected multigigabit ports, while uplink choices include 1G, 10G, and selected 40G configurations. PoE+ models can power phones, access points, cameras, and other endpoints; selected multigigabit models also support Cisco UPOE.
Optional StackWise-160 lets compatible switches operate as one managed system and supports stacks of up to nine members. Cisco stopped selling Catalyst 3650 in 2021, and final support ends on October 31, 2026. For many 3650 SKUs, Cisco identifies Catalyst 9300 or 9300L platforms as migration choices.
Licensing and Part Number Guidance
Cisco Catalyst 3650 commonly uses LAN Base, IP Base, and IP Services image-based licenses within the broader Cisco License framework. LAN Base focuses primarily on Layer 2 access functions, IP Base adds Layer 3 capabilities, and IP Services provides broader Layer 3 and IPv6 functions. Cisco also offered permanent RTU upgrades from LAN Base to IP Base or IP Services and from IP Base to IP Services.
If a Catalyst 3650 is used as a mobility controller, IP Base is required and access-point licensing can also apply. No AP license is required when the switch operates only as a mobility agent.
Part-number selection should also account for port count, PoE level, multigigabit capability, uplink type, power supply, stacking components, and the software suffix attached to the switch SKU.
Common Use Cases
| Use case | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Campus access switching | Connects users, phones, printers, cameras, and other endpoints |
| PoE and wireless access | Powers phones and access points with the correct power budget |
| Stack expansion | Maintains compatible StackWise-160 environments |
| RTU license upgrade | Moves an installed switch to a higher feature set |
| Spare or replacement | Matches existing hardware, licensing, and stack requirements |
| Migration planning | Maps legacy 3650 deployments to newer Catalyst platforms |
Models, Licenses, and Ordering Scope
| Area to check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Switch model | Exact 24/48-port, data, PoE+, UPOE, or multigigabit SKU |
| License level | LAN Base, IP Base, IP Services, or RTU upgrade |
| Uplink | Required 1G, 10G, or supported 40G configuration |
| Stack | Standalone switch or StackWise-160 member |
| Hardware | Power supplies, stack kits, cables, optics, and spares |
| Lifecycle | Replacement, migration, or remaining support requirement |
What to Check Before Requesting a Quote
Confirm the exact switch model, current license level, software version, port and PoE requirements, stack role, uplink type, and any required power supply or accessory. Also identify whether the request is for an RTU upgrade, spare unit, replacement, or migration. Because Catalyst 3650 is at the end of its lifecycle, hardware availability and support status should be checked before a final part number is selected.
Activation and Delivery Notes
RTU activation depends on the current image level and Cisco IOS XE release. A permanent feature-level change may require license activation followed by a switch reload.
For replacement hardware, verify the software and license level across existing stack members before installation. Migration projects should compare the installed 3650 SKU, port density, PoE requirement, uplinks, and routing functions with the appropriate Catalyst 9300 or 9300L replacement.
Cisco Switch pricing depends on your switch series, license type, deployment model and support requirements.
