Riverbed SteelConnect connects distributed sites through software-defined WAN policies and centralized management. A Riverbed SteelConnect license enquiry must identify the generation first: SteelConnect CX/SDI and SteelConnect EX have different architectures, entitlements, and lifecycle rules. Riverbed licensing must match the installed platform.
Quick Benefits
- Centralized configuration for distributed WAN sites
- Application-aware traffic steering in supported deployments
- Encrypted overlays across suitable WAN connections
- Policy-based branch routing and security options
- Deployment templates and performance visibility

Features & Benefits
Centralized Operations and Repeatable Deployment
SteelConnect reduces the need to configure every branch independently. The relevant management platform applies policies and supports deployment workflows. EX Director provides device and service templates for repeatable configuration. Teams can standardize site settings while reviewing local exceptions.
Application-Aware Connectivity and Path Control
Supported EX licensing enables application identification, policy-based forwarding, traffic shaping, and dynamic performance measurement. Multiple active links and IPsec overlays support flexible WAN designs. Align traffic with application requirements and validate actual performance.
Branch Security and Operational Visibility
EX combines routing with security functions selected through the applicable license bundle. Analytics supports visibility into logs and network behavior. Confirm the exact security services and analytics coverage before ordering, because advanced inspection, additional capacity, and acceleration are not automatically included in every configuration.
License Overview
SteelConnect CX uses management subscriptions associated with its platform. Riverbed’s updated CX lifecycle notice restricts certain subscription purchases to eligible existing customers renewing current subscriptions. It does not reopen discontinued hardware sales or extend software feature-release support. Check each part number and permitted term before committing to a renewal.
EX licensing is a separate assessment. Its documented model links CPE, hub, or gateway rights to features and WAN bandwidth, with management and controller rights described in the associated bundle. Analytics scope and deployment rights need their own confirmation. Historical license names do not prove current orderability.
Product Overview
CX is managed through SteelConnect Manager. EX uses Director for orchestration, Controller for control-plane functions, Analytics for operational data, and FlexVNF gateways at sites. Plan compatible components; CX and EX systems are not interchangeable.
WAN optimization is a distinct service. Selected documented EX platforms support Virtual SteelHead integration, but this requires compatible resources and acceleration licensing. An SD-WAN entitlement alone should not be treated as permission to run every Riverbed service.
Core Technical Flow
Administrators define site and application policies centrally. Provisioned gateways establish the supported overlay and exchange routing information. Traffic follows configured policies across available links, while performance measurements and analytics inform investigation. Validate forwarding, segmentation, and failover with representative applications before rolling policies out to additional branches.
Options & Licensing Models
Use the platform and intended service scope to frame the enquiry.
| Route | Licensing Focus | Buyer Check |
|---|---|---|
| Existing CX/SDI environment | Applicable management subscription | Renewal eligibility and SKU-specific lifecycle dates |
| EX branch, hub, or gateway | Instance role, bandwidth, and feature bundle | Compatible platform and currently available entitlement |
| EX security or analytics scope | Included services and associated coverage | Required functions and deployment capacity |
| Acceleration on eligible EX platforms | Separate Virtual SteelHead rights | Supported model, resources, and optimization capacity |
Compatibility & Requirements
Verify software versions across Director, Analytics, Controller, and FlexVNF. EX documentation supports certified appliances and specified virtual or cloud deployments; check the release-specific matrix before selecting a host. Plan addressing, DNS, management reachability, and WAN connectivity. CX and EX lifecycle policies must be reviewed separately.
Activation & Deployment
Prepare management access, site identifiers, appliance serials, and purchased entitlement details. Manage applicable CX licenses through SteelConnect Manager. For EX, follow the deployment and licensing instructions for the installed release and bundle rather than applying a generic appliance activation procedure.
Check licensed services and bandwidth, onboard a pilot site, and verify management registration, tunnel establishment, routing, and segmentation. Test link failure and recovery.
Pricing & Quote Process
Send the generation, exact model or virtual instance type, site count, WAN bandwidth, and required services. Include subscription expiry, SKU, and entitlement records. Identify analytics, high availability, acceleration, hardware, and hosting requirements separately.
Assess the proposal alongside your wider network licensing plans. Request a SteelConnect licensing assessment for eligible renewal or expansion options. Where lifecycle restrictions prevent an order, evaluate migration against the actual routing and security requirements.
